Vera Sola vive a Los Angeles, e prima ancora di essere famosa come cantante era già conosciuta per i suoi testi poetici. Shades è il suo primo album, uscito a novembre 2018, e ne abbiamo già parlato per il singolo The Cage. Abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con lei per scoprire la sua musica.
QUANTO TI SENTI HYPFI? CIOÈ, FAI MUSICA TRISTE MA SEI UNA PERSONA FELICE?
Sono una persona molto sensibile e provo grandi momenti di tristezza e di felicità. Tendo a fare musica triste perché sono più creativa quando sono triste, ma sono il tipo di persona capace di trovare umorismo anche nella tragedie. Rido molto, e anche nelle mie canzoni spesso ci sono momenti comici.
QUAL È LA CANZONE PIÙ TRISTE DEL TUO NUOVO ALBUM, SHADES?
La maggior parte delle mie canzoni è molto triste, per diversi motivi. The Colony e For lo sono per tragedie umane globali, mentre Black Rhino lo è perché parla dell’estinzione della specie, e queste sono quindi le più tristi a larga scala. A livello personale però New Nights è la canzone composta nel momento di dolore più grande. L’ho scritta in quindici minuti e l’ho registrata subito dopo dal vivo, piangendo per tutto il tempo.
E QUAL È QUELLA PIU’ FELICE?
Virgil’s Flowers perché parla di essere riusciti finalmente a porre fine a una relazione terribile. La canzone mi rende felice perché tutta l’esperienza che porta al “facile addio” di cui canto alla fine è stata infelice. E se c’è una cosa di cui sono felice in quella relazione è che è finita.
IN CHE MODO LA TUA MUSICA POTREBBE RENDERE FELICE CHI L’ASCOLTA?
Immagino che possa farlo perché sapere che non sei solo nella tua tristezza spesso aiuta ad alleviare il dolore. O semmai, una canzone triste in un momento triste può portare con sé una grande catarsi.
QUALI SONO LE TUE TRE CANZONI TRISTI PREFERITE DI SEMPRE?
E’ così difficile… Ma quelle che mi vengono in mente sono Hard Time Killing Floor di Skip James, Bird on a Wire di Leonard Cohen and She’s Got You di Patsy Cline.

ARE YOU HYPFI? I MEAN, IS YOUR MUSIC SAD BUT ARE YOU AN HAPPY PERSON?
I am a deeply feeling person, so I experience both great sadness and great happiness. I tend to make sad music because I’m more creative when sad. But I am the kind of person who is capable of finding humor in tragedy. I laugh a lot. And even my sad songs have jokes in them.
WHAT IS YOUR THE SADDEST SONG OF SHADES?
Most of them are very sad for different reasons. The Colony and For are about global human tragedies, Black Rhino is about the extinction of a species. So those are the saddest on the grandest scale. But personally, New Nights is the song that was written from the place of the most pain. I wrote it in 15 minutes, and tracked it shortly after. The vocal was recorded in a single take, and I wept the whole way through.
AND WHAT IS THE HAPPIEST SONG OF THE ALBUM?
The song Virgil’s Flowers because it’s about finally managing to leave a terrible relationship. That song makes me happy because the whole experience leading up to the “easy goodbye” that I sing about at the end was miserable. And if there’s one thing for me to be happy about is that that relationship is done for.
WHY LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC SHOULD MAKE A LISTENER HAPPIER?
I guess because knowing that you’re not alone in your sadness can often help alleviate the pain. Or if anything, a sad song at a sad time can bring with it a great catharsis.
CAN YOU TELL ME YOUR THREE FAVORITE SAD SONG EVER?
Oh this is so hard! There are so many but off the top of my head… Hard Time Killing Floor by Skip James, Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen and She’s Got You by Patsy Cline
