Qualche mese fa avevamo presentato Poppy Ackroyd, pianista, violinista, produttrice e compositrice neo-classica di Londra: un genere diverso dai nostri soliti ascolti ma che ci ha colpiti per la travolgente malinconia e per i sorprendenti incroci sonori che ci ha proposto. Ora è uscito Resolve, il suo quarto album, e ne abbiamo approfittato per realizzare un’intervista con lei.
QUANTO TI SENTI HYPFI? CIOÈ, FAI MUSICA TRISTE MA SEI UNA PERSONA FELICE?
Sono sia una persona triste che una felice. Ho la tendenza a comporre musica quando sono in uno stato d’animo malinconico. Il mio ultimo album, Resolve si basa sul trovare le forze, ma anche la felicità situazioni difficili e spesso tristi della vita.
QUAL È LA CANZONE PIÙ TRISTE DEL TUO NUOVO ALBUM, RESOLVE? E PERCHÉ?
Quella che suona più triste è forse Stems. Inizialmente era la colonna sonora di un cortometraggio di Ainslie Henderson, che era un elogio alla breve durata della vita dei burattini animati in stop frame.
E QUAL È INVECE LA CANZONE PIÙ FELICE DELL’ALBUM?
Nessuna delle canzoni è particolarmente felice, anche se non credo nemmeno siano del tutto tristi. Quella più felice è probabilmente The Calm Before, che porta con sé una sensazione edificante di ottimismo.
IN CHE MODO LA TUA MUSICA POTREBBE RENDERE FELICE CHI L’ASCOLTA?
Metto molto della mia vita e delle mie emozioni nella mia musica, ma essendo tutte le tracce strumentali, mantengono una natura astratta. Spero che chi mi ascolta possa identificarsi con l’album ognuno a modo suo, e che possa servire a chi ha bisogno di felicità nei loro viaggi emozionali, di qualsiasi tipo siano.
QUALI SONO LE TUE TRE CANZONI TRISTI PREFERITE DI SEMPRE?
Ci sono così tante canzoni tristi che adoro. Eccone tre che mi vengono in mente: In the Mists di Leoš Janáček, Olson dei Boards of Canada e Jynweythek degli Aphex Twin.

ARE YOU HYPFI? I MEAN, IS YOUR MUSIC SAD BUT ARE YOU AN HAPPY PERSON?
I am both a sad and happy person. I tend to compose music when I am in a more melancholy frame of mind. My latest album Resolve is all about finding strength, and also happiness in life’s challenging and often sad situations.
WHAT IS THE SADDEST SONG IN YOUR NEW ALBUM, RESOLVE? AND WHY?
The saddest sounding song is perhaps Stems. It was originally the soundtrack to a short film by Ainslie Henderson that was a eulogy to the short life span of stop frame animation puppets.
WHAT IS THE HAPPIER SONG IN IN AN OPEN FIELD? AND WHY?
None of the tracks are particularly happy, although I would not say that they sound particularly sad either. The happiest song is probably The Calm Before, there is an uplifting feeling of optimism in this track.
WHY LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC SHOULD MAKE A LISTENER HAPPIER?
I put a lot of my own life and emotions into my music, but as the tracks are all instrumental, those emotions take on an abstract nature. I hope that listeners can identify with the album in their own particular way, and that for those who need happiness that it helps them through their own emotional journeys, whatever they may be.
